Everyone who has ever learned history is familiar with events of the Cold War. This period is famous for the public interaction of different political currents on the arena of international events. We need to recall these events in order to see the danger of such interaction of interests. The bright example would be the boycott of 1984. The Soviet Delegation ignored the Olympic Games staged in Los Angeles and made a pact with other Eastern European countries. The statement was highlighted on TV a week before the official opening of the event. The Olympic Committee was quite prepared for such reaction but the statement was also from other socialist countries from Eastern Europe what could make the number of participants not as significant as it was years before. Romania appeared to be the only Eastern European country to take part in the Olympic Games. To everybody’s surprise Cuba also joined the boycott and ignored the event completely.
Delegation members stated commercialization of the event and poor security conditions for athletes. The host-country officials objected and cited ideal security measures and good arrangements with any service necessary for the Games. Analysts came to the conclusion that this statement could be another political act performed by the Soviet party. This can be an act of retaliation for the boycotting the event in Moscow in 1980. The US led the boycott along with West European countries that protested against Russian invasion into Afghanistan. I was a student then and was only learning how to write a good article and remember myself gathering data very well. Some people appeared to believe the USSR and their facts, but the majority took the side of the White House that claimed their actions to be nothing more than a political act. The on-site officials state that they provided athletes with all necessary security features. Over 140 athletes participated in the Games but the quality of performance could have been better. The matter is that the countries that ignored the Olympics in Los Angeles were medal holders of the previous games, so some athletes despite their absolute victories made a conclusion that their success could be doubtful if their rivals participated.
Olympic Games became profitable, are held due to various sponsors not due to the support of the government. Countries strive for the right to stage the Games that attract the attention of the world towards their country. We can’t say that political motives do not play their role in the arrangement of any international event nowadays. Athletes feel the pressure and act accordingly. A good example is the place where the Olympics 2008 will be held. Beijing will be the host but several organizations boycott this decision of the Olympic Committee already, claiming that this decision has political motivation. The Olympic Games are meant to bring peace and friendly relations to the countries gathering for such an important event.
